Reaching for the Moon

Reaching for the Moon

Poet Elizabeth Bishop's (Miranda Otto) love affair with architect Lota de Macedo Soares (Gloria Pires) is the basis of Reaching for the Moon which is a film I ultimately loved in spite of itself. The true story of these fascinating women was a worthy start and the acting is quite fabulous, but the male director chose to make some bold strokes when subtlety may have worked better. The story is seductive, sexy, tragic and passionate, in other words, a classic love story.
